Hello/Tansi,

We wanted to take this end-of-2025 blog post to introduce two members of the team behind the ReconciliACTION blog: Megan Reti and Hero Laird.

Megan

Hi!

My name is Megan Reti and I am a lawyer, a member of the Metis Nation of Alberta, and the newest (sort of) member of the Wahkohtowin Law and Governance Lodge’s legal team, having just rejoined the team on December 1.

I worked as a research assistant with the WLGL as a law student and also participated in the ReconcilliACTION blog in my third year (you can check out my original introduction here), so it is very exciting to be back and I look forward to writing for ReconciliACTION once again. I am a self-professed “law nerd” and one of the areas I find the most fascinating is considering how Indigenous law and legal traditions can and do interact with the common law and federal and provincial statutes. Outside of work, I enjoy theatre, thrifting and reading. I recently purchased a copy of Patty Krawec’s Bad Indians Book Club that I’m looking forward to reading over the holiday break.

Hero

Hello, tansi, salut,

This was a "retro" fall for me as I returned to the Wahkohtowin Law and Governance Lodge team after welcoming a new child into my family, and I am now also returning to ReconciliACTION blogging (now as a lawyer - you can read my original introduction here).

I am arriving to this project with an open heart, guided by a little one who makes me smile every day (and yes, sometimes pull my hair out!). Recently reading Leanne Betasamosake Simpson's A Short History of the Blockade and Ursula K. LeGuin's Telling is Listening has reminded me what an honour it is to be able to act with, listen and learn from others. Through my work with the Lodge, I continue to learn so much from Indigenous communities and organizations leading the way. For me this blog is a small way to share some of that reflection as practises of Indigenous law continue to live and grow, and I continue to find my place in the work as a settler of Irish, English and Scottish descent who makes Treaty 6 home. (Find me planting trees, hosting potlucks and making art!) I hope this blog is another way to learn together - we want to hear from community members reading and reflecting on Indigenous law practise, promise, and realities in this complex world.

Stay tuned for more reflections and updates, and introductions from more of the writing team in January.

For now, take care in this snowy mid-winter season! Going forward, the blog will be updated approximately every two weeks, beginning in the new year. Until then, the ReconciliACTION team wishes you a safe and peaceful holiday season.
