tansi ninôtemik,
Are you looking for ways to get involved with reconciliation? Here are 5 actions you can take to support and learn from Indigenous peoples on this National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
Attend the Orange Shirt Day Run/Walk Every Child Matters [1]
Indigenous Runner, founded by Nêhiyaw lawyer Anita Cardinal, hosts the Orange Shirt Day Run/Walk each year on National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This year the annual Edmonton run/walk will be taking place in Walterdale Park from 12:00-6:00PM on September 30. If you want to get in on the RunConciliAction, register here.
Go to the Every Child Matters Round Dance [2]
On Saturday October 5, maskêkosak kiskinomâtowikamik is hosting an Every Child Matters Round Dance. Visit the Chief Lapotec Recreation Centre on Enoch Cree Nation for a feast at 4pm and a round dance to follow!
Experience nâtawihowin ᓈᑕᐃᐧᐦᐅᐃᐧᐣ Healing Medicine [3]
Hosted by the IAM Collective, nâtawihowin is a two day cultural showcase. There are market vendors, free and paid workshops, an Indigenous Cafe and more! Experience the culture Friday September 27 from 4:00-9:00 PM and Saturday September 28 from 10:00-8:00 PM at the Alberta Avenue Community Centre.
Join a Beading Circle [4]
The Art Gallery of Alberta is hosting a beading circle with Alaynee Goodwill-Littlechild! Join Alaynee in the Main Hall from 12:00-4:00 PM to learn to bead or continue working on your own beading projects! Beading kits will be available for purchase, but otherwise this event is admission by donation!
Learn from Local Indigenous Elders and Leaders [5]
West Edmonton Mall is hosting a two day event for National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Go to Center Stage, Level One, Phase I near the Hudson’s Bay Company for stories from Elders, traditional dance, and an artisan market.
These are only a few of the events happening around the city. While we encourage you to go to these important events, part of reconciliation is putting in the time and effort, doing the work. Be sure to put in the time and effort to find other events happening around the city. Support local Indigenous artisans. Read some of the excellent Indigenous literature out there.
ekosi and until next time,
The ReconciliACTION Team
